Camped off Batsto Road. At half past eleven something screamed — not a fox, not an owl, a long descending wail that set both dogs off. Next morning I found cloven-looking prints in the mud by the creek, too big for deer and in a straight line like something hopping. The unearthly scream and the prints together are why I am filing this as Jersey Devil rather than wildlife.
